I’m Gonna Piss People Off

Look, I know what I’m about to say is gonna ruffle some feathers. But frankly, I don’t care. I’ve been in this industry for 22 years, and I’ve seen alot of nonsense. So let’s talk about hydration in sports. It’s completley overrated.

I was at a conference in Austin last year, right? Some big-shot sports scientist named Dr. Linda Chen stood up and said, ‘Hydration is the foundation of athletic performance.’ I nearly laughed out loud. I mean, come on. It’s not that simple.

I get it. We’ve all been told to chug water before, during, and after exercise. But honestly, it’s not that black and white. I’ve seen athletes choke on their own ambition, drowning in a pool of their own making.

My Personal Hydration Disaster

Back in 2007, I ran the Chicago Marathon. I trained like a maniac, but I was stupid about water. I drank and drank and drank. By mile 18, I was in trouble. My stomach was sloshing like a washing machine. I finished, but it was miserable. I learned the hard way: more isn’t always better.

I told this to a friend named Marcus last Tuesday. He said, ‘But Mike, hydration is key to preventing cramps.’ I said, ‘Yeah, but it’s not the only factor. And honestly, cramps are overblown too.’ He looked at me like I had three heads. But I stand by it.

Listen to the Experts (Sometimes)

I’m not saying hydration doesn’t matter. It does. But it’s not the be-all and end-all. I talked to a colleague named Dave, who’s a physicaly therapist. He said, ‘Mike, you’re not wrong, but you’re not right either. It’s about balance.’

Dave’s right. Balance is key. But the sports world loves simple answers. ‘Drink 8 glasses a day!’ ‘Electrolytes are magic!’ It’s all bullshit. Your body is smarter than that.

And look, I’m not a doctor. I’m just a guy who’s seen alot. I’ve seen athletes dehydrated and overhydrated. Both are bad. So find your balance. Listen to your body. And for the love of god, stop drinking water like it’s your job.

Allergies and Hydration? Really?

Here’s where I go off the rails. I was reading an article—okay, it was a tweet—about how hydration helps with allergies. I mean, what? I asked a friend named Sarah about it. She said, ‘I don’t know, but I guess it makes sense. Water is good for everything.’

Which… yeah. Fair enough. But still. If you’re dealing with allergies, maybe check out this allergies prevention treatment guide instead of just chugging water. Just saying.

I’m not sure why I brought this up. It’s not even relevant. But here we are. Tangents are fun.

The Big Picture

So here’s the deal. Hydration matters. But it’s not the only thing. It’s not even the most important thing. It’s just part of the puzzle. So stop obsessing over it. Drink when you’re thirsty. Stop when you’re not. It’s that simple.

I know I’m gonna get hate mail for this. But honestly, I don’t care. I’ve been doing this for too long to care about opinions. I care about results. And results come from balance, not dogma.

So there you have it. My hot take on hydration. Take it or leave it. I’m gonna go drink a beer. (Which, by the way, is not part of any hydration strategy. But it’s delicious.)
